TALK. school holidays Header

To give the holiday the best start, plan all of your activities and outings together with your tamariki. Ask them what they are interested in doing, make your own suggestions and add new interests that you have noticed. Then together decide when you all want to do which activity. Once the holiday plan is finished create a spread sheet with all pictures and keep it visible so you and your tamariki know what you can look forward to. While creating this plan a good idea is to allow the first few days to be quiet days. That way everybody has more energy for the rest of the holiday.

Here are few ideas that you can do with your tamariki in the school holidays:

  • Check out the Au Pair Link events and your relevant Au Pair Link Facebook pages to see what events are planned that you could attend.

  • You could organise a picnic in a playground or a park close by your home. Prepare the food with your tamariki and let them choose the blanket and so on, that way your tamariki are more involved and will have more fun.

  • You could organise a group activity with other au pairs and there tamariki. You can do so much that is more fun with more children.

  • You could borrow new board games from the library to play. That way you are all learning new games and they can be swapped regularly.

  • You can do many different Arts and Craft activities, create gift cards or decorate shirts or pillow cases with fabric markers/ paint, create a photo book for you family or you could share your craft traditions from home with your tamariki.

  • You could cook or bake with your tamariki and then serve your creations to your host parents in the evening or the next day with the tamariki.

  • You could discover the surrounding nature with your tamariki. Go for a local bush walk, collect natural resources and invent new games to play with them. You could make a treasure hunt for you tamariki. Treasure hunts can easily be tailored to your tamariki and their learning!

  • You could spice up your day trips, by using public transport to get to the destination and/or meet up with playdates. That would make the journey there and back exciting for the tamariki too.

  • You could support your tamariki to create a show that they can perform for their parents. Show like this need planning, preparation and practice. Create everything from the show, the setting, to the tickets, money and snacks needed.

  • Include your language and own traditions in activities with your tamariki. You could sing songs you know from your childhood or easy games that you think your tamariki could enjoy.

Check out what type of day trips you can do in your area. Some ideas could be:

  • Zoo

  • Museum

  • Beach

  • Library

  • Special playground, that is a bit further away

  • Bush Walks

  • Any many more places that are in your area.
