Driving in New Zealand
If you require your Au Pair to drive in New Zealand as part of their job – we will ensure that they have a full, clean and valid drivers licence. However, there are a few things that your Au Pair may not be used to when driving in New Zealand. For example:
- Driving on the left side of the road
- The steep, narrow and winding roads of New Zealand
Coupled with the above points, when your Au Pair arrives in New Zealand they will most likely be jet-lagged. Therefore, it is important for you to drive with your Au Pair when they first arrive to help them become familiar with the local driving conditions and rules. Your Au Pair will also receive theoretical driving lessons conducted by a professional driving instructor at orientation.
You are required to fully insure your car for the Au Pair if they will be driving your car whilst employed by you. Third party insurance is not an acceptable level of insurance. If you do not have car insurance that covers or includes your Au Pair, you will be responsible for any accidents and associated costs that occur while the Au Pair is driving your car during the 12 month placement term. Please note that if you live rurally (with limited or no access to public transport) you must provide a car for your Au Pair to drive.
We encourage you to buy your Au Pair the New Zealand Road Code if they will be driving regularly as part of their job. For more information on driving in New Zealand please contact us or visit the New Zealand Transport Agency website.
