Note: All figures in the above table are net and exclude PAYE tax and any applicable ACC levies. Au Pair weekly wages are net cash payments exclusive of PAYE tax and board or lodging. As a result, board or lodging must be included as part of the total gross package provided to your Au Pair – on which PAYE tax is calculated. For more information on your tax responsibilities as an employer please visit the Your Tax Obligations page on our website.

Completion bonus

You must also pay your Au Pair a Completion Bonus in recognition of a successful Placement Term and as a contribution toward the return flight home of your Au Pair. You must agree on the length of the Placement Term prior to matching with an Au Pair (e.g. 6 , 9 or 12 months). The Completion Bonus is $20 net per week and is prorated over the length of the Placement Term. For example, for a 12 month Placement Term the net Completion Bonus is $1,040.00 ($20 x 52 weeks). The Completion Bonus is paid at the end of the Placement Term by the Host Family to the Au Pair.

Board and lodging

The Au Pair wage is exclusive of tax, room and board. These factors will need to be included as part of a total taxable package provided by you to your Au Pair. The Host Family must provide their Au Pair with board and lodging – consisting of a private and separate bedroom and including all meals. For more information on your tax responsibilities as an employer please visit the Your Tax Obligations page on our website.

Au Pair and Employee rights and responsibilities

An Au Pair is not to work more than 45 hours per week or a maximum of 10 hours per day. Host Families must also provide their Au Pair with at least two consecutive days off per week and one weekend off per month. The Au Pair that you select to join your family will be employed by you personally for the duration of the Placement Term (length of stay). As your employee the Au Pair will be entitled to all the benefits and rights that a normal employee enjoys under New Zealand law e.g. an Au Pair is entitled to annual holidays and public holidays as set out in the Holidays Act. For more information on your responsibilities as an employer please visit the Employer Responsibilities page on our website.
